Omega-3 Polyunsaturated Fatty Acids and Coronary Heart Disease Prevention
نویسنده
چکیده
The interest in Omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids and coronary heart disease has arisen only over the course of the past 25 years. In the 1970s, Danish investigators studied heart disease rates in native peoples of Greenland and discovered significantly lower levels of acute myocardial infarction in Eskimos compared with ageand sex-matched Danes. On further investigation, Bang and Dyerberg concluded that the high level of Omega-3 fatty acids in their native diet may have accounted for the low rates of coronary heart disease (CHD). In studies of other populations such as the Japanese, higher fish intake has also been associated with lower rates of heart disease. In addition to replacing meat (with its saturated fatty acids and cholesterol), fish serves as the best source of long-chain ω3 fatty acids. By the mid 1980s, Omega 3 fatty acids became the focus of intense investigation.

Heart failure (HF) incidence increases worldwide and is affected by various risk factors such as coronary artery disease, hypertension, obesity, and diabetes. Dietary recommendations for patients with HF have generally focused on sodium restriction; however, different nutritional approaches are considered in patients with a high risk of malnutrition due to the diuretic drugs they use. Omega-3 f...

PuFA = polyunsaturated fatty acids CVD = cardiovascular disease omega-3 PuFa Most of the evidence of the benefits of omega-3 PUFA was obtained for long-chain fatty acids, eicosapentaenoic acid and docosahexaenoic acid, the active components of fish oils [1]. Humans get omega-3 PUFA from fish oils. The original source of the omega-3 found in fish oils is marine microorganisms. The current Americ...

Epidemiological and clinical trial evidence suggests that omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) might have a significant role in the prevention of coronary heart disease. Dietary sources of omega-3 PUFA include fish oils rich in eicosapentaenoic acid and docosahexaenoic acid along with plants rich in alpha-linolenic acid. Randomized clinical trials with fish oils (eicosapentaenoic acid an...

Omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acid (omega-3 PUFA) therapy continues to show great promise in primary and, particularly in secondary prevention of cardiovascular (CV) diseases. The most compelling evidence for CV benefits of omega-3 PUFA comes from 4 controlled trials of nearly 40,000 participants randomized to receive eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) with or without docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) in stu...

Fatty acids can be divided into four general categories: saturated, monounsaturated, polyunsaturated, and trans fats. Saturated fatty acids and trans fats are associated with an increased risk of coronary heart disease. Monounsaturated fatty acids and polyunsaturated fatty acids are associated with a decreased risk of coronary heart disease, although these associations are not uniformly support...
